PenFed certificate early withdrawal penalty
| Term | Penalty |
|---|---|
| 6-month certificates | 90 days of interest |
| 12 to 84-month certificates | 365 days of interest (first 365 days); then 30% of the interest the CD would earn to maturity |
Example: $10,000 in a 1-year certificate at 3.20%, withdrawn after 6 months, has earned $158.74. The penalty is $158.74, so you would get $10,000.00.
PenFed caps the penalty at the dividends you have earned, so it does not reach your principal. Official disclosure (checked 2026-11-04).

How We Calculate & Keep This Accurate
Maturity value is your deposit grown at the APY for the term: A = P × (1 + APY)^(months ÷ 12). The APY for each term is the highest balance tier your deposit qualifies for. Early withdrawal penalties are charged as simple interest on the deposit at the CD's interest rate (the APY converted to its daily rate), following PenFed's published rule for that term.
Rates come from PenFed's own rate page. We use the APY Ledger dataset (CC BY 4.0) to spot rate changes, and we checked a sample of rates and the penalty rules against PenFed's website and disclosures. Results are estimates, not an offer from the bank.
