CD comparison FAQs

Quick answers on comparing CD rates between banks.

How do I compare CD rates between banks?

Compare APYs term by term, not just the headline rate: banks often pay their top rate on one odd term only. Then check the early withdrawal penalty, the minimum opening deposit and whether the rate needs a linked account. Every matchup on this page shows the rates side by side with what $10,000 earns at each bank.

Are online banks' CD rates really higher than big banks'?

Usually, yes. Online banks carry lower overhead and price CDs aggressively, while the largest branch banks often pay near the FDIC national average on standard terms. The comparisons above put the exact current numbers side by side rather than relying on the rule of thumb.

What else matters besides the APY?

The early withdrawal penalty (which can reach your principal at some banks), balance tiers that change the APY with deposit size, promotional terms that auto-renew at a lower rate, and whether the bank is FDIC-insured or the credit union NCUA-insured. All of these appear on each comparison page.

Sources and how we calculate

Every matchup uses rates from the banks' own rate pages (most recently checked Nov 7, 2026) and penalty rules verified against official disclosures. We publish a curated set of high-interest matchups rather than every possible pair. Results are estimates, not an offer from any bank.

Figures last checked on Nov 7, 2026. Read our calculation methodology for data sources and update schedule.
